RADIOKOP - EC SECURITY ENSURING MAXIMUM COMMUNITY SAFETY WITH INSTALLATION OF SECURITY CAMERAS

Residents of Radiokop gathered in Melody Street for the launch of new and advanced neighbourhood security cameras.

Greg Olsen, chairperson of the Radiokop Resident’s Association welcomed everyone, especially Eugene Coetzee, owner of EC Security, and his team who made the installation of the cameras in the neighbourhood possible.

Olsen said, “Vice-chairperson, Ingrid Dinsmore’ s negotiations with security companies to install cameras had been taking place over several months and this outcome was a positive one for the neighbourhood, thanks to EC.”

The security camera plan had been in the pipeline since March 2015 and came to fruition when the cameras were installed on 25 May. Since then, Dinsmore said there has been a drop in suspicious cars, that residents suspect are responsible for drug dealing in the area.

Coetzee indicated they would install more cameras in the near future in order to improve the safety of residents dependent on support from the community. The resident’s association will communicate the requirements for future cameras with the residents in the near future.

Champagne and boerie rolls followed the official launch on 27 May and neighbourhood bonding followed, despite the chill of the evening.

EC SECURITY CATCHES CABLE THIEVES RED HANDED AFTER TIP-OFF

WELTEVREDENPARK - Yesterday EC Security Armed Response Unit received a tip off regarding smoke coming from a greenbelt area in Radiokop.  We then swiftly dispatched members of our Armed Response Unit to the area to investigate and follow up on the tip off received. 

Our Armed Response Officers arrived on the scene and quickly began investigating. Suspects were found stripping / removing plastic insulation from copper cable that they had stolen.  

The suspects, caught by surprise by our vigilant officers, were quickly apprehended and brought to justice as our Armed Response Officers managed to arrest one of the cable thieves. The captured criminal was then handed over to the Honeydew SAPS who also took the cable as evidence against them. Cable as taken by SAPS Honeydew.

We would like to thank the community for their assistance and we are always willing to assist the SAPS as we have done in the past and will continue to do in the future.

CABLE THEFT A REALITY IN SOUTH AFRICA
The almost 3000 incidents of cable theft a year is resulting in R30-million in losses for the city of Johannesburg. Joburg’s City Power department is battling to keep cable theft under control. 
In 2013 40% of all power outages were as a result of cable theft. That number increased in November and December 2013 to 60%. R30-million is being spent a year replacing infrastructure.

Some of the hotspot areas for example are Kya Sands, Honeydew, Kliptown, Lenasia, Blairgowrie, Craighall Park, Crosby, Mayfair.

"I would just like to take the time to send you a letter commending the actions last week of one of your security guards, Mr Lloyd Mashaba (employer #1832).

My 78 year old mom, Mrs Thomas, had her purse stolen 2 weeks ago, whilst she was shopping, and both her ID and driver’s licence were in the purse. This obviously was a most distressing thing to happen to an elderly lady.

On Saturday 7^th February 2015, Lloyd Mashaba was at work and noticed 2 men running past his station on Peter Place. He then saw some items falling out of the pocket of one of the men. Lloyd went to investigate and saw that the items were an ID book and driver’s licence, clearly not belonging to the man who had dropped it. He took note of the address at the back of the ID book and sent a friend to the address in order to deliver both items back to my mom, as he was working and could not leave his post. Unbeknown to Lloyd and his friend, my mom had recently moved from that address – undeterred, the friend went across to the neighbouring house and asked if they knew my mom. The neighbour kindly phoned my mom and the items have been returned to her.

It is so easy in this day and age to simply ignore one’s social responsibility and it would have much easier and far less time consuming for Lloyd to throw the ID book away and forget about it, but the time and consideration that he (and his friend) took to return those items to their rightful owner is most commendable and sincerely appreciated by our family. My mom has since been up to meet Lloyd and to thank him personally. I have also chatted to Lloyd on the phone and he took the time to let me know that this is how he has been trained to do his job – it is indeed refreshing to hear someone who obviously has the best interests of the community and its members at heart! A lesson that we can all learn from!"
